A November Note on Trees
Trees are one of the greatest gifts to our lives. Trees can shield a poor view, enhance a good view and offer shade to all comers. Trees are one of the greatest gifts to our lives. As summer temperatures continue to soar, we are going to want more shade. That can come not from narrow spikes or spires of plants, but from trees that form a broad canopy.
Native oaks and hickories are capable of lowering summer temperatures by up to 44 degrees, and with it comes the need for less air conditioning, which causes more heat production. The dappled shade in our gardens will even offer us a bit of protection from harsh ultraviolet sun rays.
Planting a tree is an act of generosity to the future. I have often said my greatest joy comes from planting a tree and then returning to it again and again as it grows in stature. Many years ago, Gardens to Love planted three oak trees at the corner of Peachtree Battle Avenue and Peachtree Street. Our client, Dr. Elizabeth Feeley, wanted some shade on that little white building where she worked every day. Those trees are still there, shading not only the building but the bus stop and intersection.
